Am I a developer now?
So, about half year ago I decided to take a leap and make a career change. I applied to a coding boot camp, got accepted, and at the moment I am now half way through it.
The idea of learning to code was first formed in me a couple of years ago. It had always seemed like something super difficult and mysterious, but I was just drawn to the challenge of it, could I do it? Coming from a scientific background as an engineer, I instantly liked the exact logical thinking and problem-solving nature of it. From starting out playing around in the Sololearn app, followed by online tutorials in Python and web development, to finally taking a seat at the Technigo FrontEnd boot camp. It was now or never!
It has been some very intensive weeks so far starting with basic HTML, CSS and Javascript, and now creating projects in React. It is a journey filled with fun and despair and eveything between, and I can´t believe how fast the weeks fly by.
When our brilliant guest lecturer told us the other day; “ — Yes, go ahead and call yourselves frontend developers now”, that really struck a point inside of me. Is that true, can I title myself as a developer? Or am I faking it til I´m making it?
Maybe this is part of being a coder, carrying two little friends called SelfDoubt and ImposterSyndrome around on each shoulder. After all, I have heard wise people say that one is never full-taught as a programmer and staring at your code wondering why it´s not working is basically part of daily life as a developer. Therefore, to combat the feeling of being a fraud, I think it is important to take the time to reflect on the progress being made every week and celebrate the milestones reached.
Looking back, I know I have come a long way since starting out learning to code and I´m excited to see where my journey will take me. I have a great feeling about entering the tech world, continue to grow and be part of this community.
